When the very first VW Type 1 rolled off the German production line in 1949, no one could have foreseen the icon it would become.
The first generation split windscreen model also known as “The Splitty” was produced from 1949 to 1967. During this time the humble VW bus had crossed the Atlantic Ocean, becoming a cultural icon in the U.S.
The vehicle’s popularity guaranteed a second generation the T2 Bay, renamed by some as “The Bay window or Bread loaf”. This version was produced from 1967 to 1979 and also became an icon of its own deserving.
What came next was the VW T3, although, for some bizarre reason, these are also known as the T25, this was a total redesign for the VW bus and was completely different in looks and technology. Some models came with more modern upgrades such as air conditioning, redesigned transmission and 4 wheel drive.
When the T3 / T25 was released in the US in 1985, the American buyers thought it looked like a cross between the traditional VW T2 and the very popular American Station Wagon and it was quickly nicknamed a “Vanagon”. It was from this point that people who drove the VW T3 buses were called “Vanagoons”
You guessed it, this is how we settled on our name, however, there are not 21 of us, but the T3 was available in 21 colour combinations, and it seemed to much of a coincidence that we started the company in 2021, plus we really do like the number.
From 1992 onwards the T4 was made until 2003 and proved just as popular as its predecessors. This was the first generation of Transporter van that had a more conventional front engine with front wheel drive and became very popular to covert into a full and proper Campervan.
From 2003 to 2015 the T5 come along, It offered a choice of two load lengths and three roof heights, and over 100 different variants in total. Making it one of the most versatile VW vans ever built.
2015 to 2019 saw the T6 had a very significant upgrade over the T5, introducing more efficient engines, and upping its safety game with modern driver assistance aids.
There were even greater changes in 2019, when the T6.1 facelift was introduced with its revised interior and increased connectivity and even further efficiency improvements.
The VW van range remains one of the best, and most popular vans with a range that stretches from basic working vehicles right though to luxury Campervans.
All the VW’s remain very popular with conversion enthusiasts for both professional and DIY projects.
